The Avocet - for many years a Top 5 golf course on the MBGA Player’s Top 20 golf course - was always the best of the original four courses that were at this facility, with consistently some of the best greens in town. It features multiple tees, elevated tees, wide landing areas, contoured fairways, double fairways, grass bunkers, moderate amount of sand, strategically placed water, fast, elevated and even a double green serving two holes. In 1994 Golf Digest named it as one of The Top 10 Best New Resort Courses in America, and in 1997 they named the 14th hole there as one of The Best 18 Holes You Can Play. In December of 2005 Wild Wing Plantation was sold to a group of developers including some of the owners of Arrowhead Country Club. They closed the Falcon, Hummingbird and Wood Stork courses, and then created a jury-rigged 9-holer they call the Hummingbird 9. Early in 2010, the Myrtle Beach National Company took over the management, and things began to swiftly improve across the board. With new Mini-Verde Bermuda greens the Avocet 18 has improved dramatically, while the Hummingbird 9, with its PennLinks Bentgrass greens, remains only slightly better than average. Their once excellent practice area, is now only a small putting green and a so-so driving range.
