Here is yet another of Golf Digest’s “clueless rankings” foolishness. Tidewater is currently ranked No. 94 on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and No. 25 on their Best Golf Courses in South Carolina rankings behind the TPC of Myrtle Beach, the Heritage Club, neither of which appear on their 100 Greatest Public Courses. They are No. 7 on Golf Magazine’s Best Public Golf Courses in South Carolina and No. 6 by Golfweek on their Best Courses You Can Play in South Carolina roster. This is a traditional-style tract, located on a beautiful, rolling, salt-marsh peninsula, with nine very scenic holes overlooking the expansive salt marshes and Intracoastal Waterway. The inland holes wander through a forest, and water hazards come into play on six holes. In 1990 Golf Digest named it the Best New Public Golf Course in America, but development has taken away some of the luster. Over the last couple of years the conditions at Tidewater deteriorated, especially with respect to the fairways, and they lost their long-time MBGA Player’s Top 20 ranking. Well, they’re back and are again a MBGA Player’s Top 20 golf course.
