Evidently, spending over $500K on renovations to greens, bunkers, cart paths and 5 tee boxes has paid off for this the first course at Sea Trail. We have always considered it the weakest track, because of all the housing surrounding it, but golfers playing it disagree. It is short and narrow track that winds through the Carolina Pines and features five holes along the marshes and Calabash River. It features waste bunkers as well as medium-sized greens with water in-play at least a dozen times. The Maples clubhouse is rather dinky and barren, in comparison to the Jones/Byrd clubhouse. In 1986, it was nominated for Golf Digest’s Best New Resort Courses, but that was long before all of the development.
Golfer Beware: In late September Sea Trail Golf Resort & Conference Center filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with assets of $34 million dollars (mostly in land) and $22 million in debts. Their lawyer insists that this, and the other two golf courses at Sea Trail, will not be negatively impacted by the bankruptcy, but who believes lawyers? “Forewarned is forearmed,” and everyone should keep that tried and true adage in mind when considering booking any tee times at Sea Trail.
