Currently ranked No. 14 on Golf Magazine’s Best Public Golf Courses in South Carolina roster and No, 15 in South Carolina by Golf Digest, the Heritage is, historically, one of the top 5 plantation golf experiences in the Myrtle Beach area, and while they had had some problems in the past with their greens they are back on our “must play” list. This is one of the earliest of the “plantation style” golf courses. It was built on the site of the pre-Civil War True Blue and Midway rice plantations. It winds through over 600-acres of giant magnolias, 300-year-old oaks, fresh water lakes and marshes. A magnificent avenue of oaks leads to the Southern Colonial clubhouse overlooking the Waccamaw River. Ranked as one of the “50 Best Public Courses in America” by Golf Digest the Heritage features spacious, rolling fairways and large, undulating greens, surrounded by lush stands of crepe myrtle, camellias and azaleas. Consider it Caledonia without the “sticker shock.” In 2007 they completed extensive renovations to tee boxes, bunkers and converting their greens to Champions Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda. Their parent company, Legends Resorts, crashed and burned in 2009 to the tune of more than $53 million. Century Golf Partners, a part of Arnold Palmer Golf Management, picked up the pieces, and have done an excellent job of maintaining the high standards the Legends was well known for, as well as becoming known for more freebies than all of the other golf operators in town combined.
