Here’s a “ratings” doozy for you, the Dunes Club is currently ranked No. 46 on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, but No. 16 behind both the TPC of Myrtle Beach and the The Heritage Club in their Best in South Carolina rankings. They are not ranked on Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play, but they still rank it as the 4th Best Public Golf Course in South Carolina, behind Caledonia. What an asinine cluster-futz! With faster A-1 bent grass greens and many reworked bunkers this classic, old style and previously highly over-rated course finally has something better to offer, and is getting better reviews. This tract was the site of the PGA Senior Tour Championships for four years, a Women’s U.S. Open and the finals of PGA Tour Qualifying School. Built almost on the beach, this oceanside golf course, with four sets of tees, was consistently rated one of America’s 100 Golf Courses, primarily because the Dunes hosted the Golf Writers of America every year. However, with the loss of the Golf Writers event they are no longer on the Golf Digest Top 100, nor is any other Myrtle Beach area track. This is a semi-private facility known for its “Old South” country club atmosphere and service. It features a broad variety of holes with their No. 13 (a.k.a. Waterloo) being world famous.
